Brígida Astorga de Santellano (“Mamaica”)

Con profundo pesar, pero con la esperanza que hay en Cristo, anunciamos que nuestra querida madre, Brígida Astorga de Santellano, cariñosamente conocida como “Mamaica”, partió con el Señor el día 23 de abril de 2026 en Kingwood, Texas.

Nació el 8 de octubre de 1934 en Atotonilco, municipio de Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, México. Fue precedida en muerte por sus padres, Loreto Astorga García y Brígida Valdez. Creció en una familia numerosa, junto a cuatro hermanos y siete hermanas, quienes también le precedieron en la muerte.

El 14 de febrero de 1957 contrajo matrimonio con Martín Santellano Arana, con quien formó un hogar y enfrentó los desafíos de la vida con amor y perseverancia.

El aspecto que definió su vida fue su profunda fe en Dios. En 1987, tomó la decisión de entregar su vida a Cristo y fue bautizada en el nombre de Jesús en la Colonia Hidalgo, Durango, México, marcando el inicio de una vida de convicción firme y entrega espiritual. Desde entonces, amó profundamente la Palabra de Dios, especialmente el libro de Isaías, el cual leía constantemente. Sus pasajes favoritos eran los Salmos 23 y 91.

Fue una mujer servicial, generosa y trabajadora en la obra de Dios. Siempre dispuesta a ayudar, a servir y a dar de sí misma sin esperar nada a cambio. Muchos recordarán cómo nunca faltaba a las “tamaleadas” en la Tercera Iglesia de Chicago-Oasis, sin imaginar que un día su hijo sería pastor en esa misma iglesia. Ese era su corazón: constante, entregado y fiel. Nunca faltó a la iglesia; siempre estuvo presente, hasta que en los últimos meses de su vida, debido a su salud, ya no le fue posible asistir.

Sirvió fielmente a sus pastores y fue bendecida al ser guiada por el Obispo Samuel Arellano, el Obispo Guadalupe Zúñiga, y culminó su caminar bajo el pastorado de su querido yerno, Elías Montes. Partió dejando un legado de generosidad, servicio y firmeza espiritual.

A ese legado le sobreviven sus hijos: Olga, Irma, Pastor Martín, Pastor Tiburcio y Mary; y fue precedida en la muerte por su hija Elodia. Asimismo, deja a sus yernos Lupe, Pastor Eduardo, Lauro y Pastor Elías; sus nueras Dora y Mely; 19 nietos, de quienes estaba profundamente orgullosa por su entrega a la obra de Dios; 28 bisnietos y un tataranieto, a quien tuvo la bendición de conocer. Cada uno de ellos refleja la fuerza y dedicación con la que ella vivió.

Su vida no se trató de recibir reconocimiento, sino de servir. No se trató de comodidad, sino de propósito.

Hoy, aunque sentimos su partida, no lloramos sin esperanza. La fe que sostuvo con tanta firmeza es la misma que nos asegura que ahora está en la presencia del Señor a quien tanto amó.

Descansa en paz. Tu obra aquí fue cumplida, y encontramos consuelo en la esperanza de que un día nos volveremos a ver.

With deep sorrow, but with the hope we have in Christ, we announce that our beloved mother, Brígida Astorga de Santellano, affectionately known as “Mamaica,” went to be with the Lord on April 23, 2026, in Kingwood, Texas.

She was born on October 8, 1934, in Atotonilco, municipality of Santiago Papasquiaro, Durango, Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, Loreto Astorga García and Brígida Valdez de. She grew up in a large family alongside four brothers and seven sisters, all of whom also preceded her in death.

On February 14, 1957, she married Martín Santellano Arana, with whom she built a home and faced life’s challenges with love and perseverance.

The defining aspect of her life was her deep faith in God. In 1987, she made the decision to give her life to Christ and was baptized in the name of Jesus in Colonia Hidalgo, Durango, Mexico, marking the beginning of a life of firm conviction and spiritual devotion. From that moment on, she deeply loved the Word of God, especially the book of Isaiah, which she read constantly. Her favorite passages were Psalms 23 and 91.

She faithfully served her pastors and was blessed to be shepherded by Bishop Samuel Arellano, Bishop Guadalupe Zúñiga, and she completed her journey under the pastoral care of her beloved son-in-law, Pastor Elías Montes.

She was a servant-hearted, generous, and hardworking woman in the work of God. Always willing to help, to serve, and to give of herself without expecting anything in return. Many will remember how she never missed the “tamaleades” at the Third Church of Chicago-Oasis, never imagining that one day her son would become a pastor in that same church. That was her heart: steady, devoted, and faithful. She never missed church; she was always present, it wasn’t until in the final months of her life, due to her health, she was no longer able to attend. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity, service, and spiritual steadfastness.

She is survived by her children: Olga, Irma, Pastor Martín, Pastor Tiburcio, and Mary; and was preceded in death by her daughter Elodia. She also leaves behind her sons-in-law Lupe, Pastor Eduardo, Lauro, and Pastor Elías; her daughters-in-law Dora and Mely; 19 grandchildren, of whom she was deeply proud for their dedication to the work of God; 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, whom she had the blessing to meet. Each of them reflects the strength and dedication with which she lived.

Her life was not about receiving recognition, but about serving. It was not about comfort, but about purpose.

Today, although we feel her passing, we do not mourn without hope. The faith she held so firmly is the same faith that assures us she is now in the presence of the Lord whom she loved so deeply.
